NDN Girls Book Club was founded by Kinsale Drake (Diné) and Lily Painter (Kiowa/Winnebago), who both come from tribes that have profoundly influenced American Western aesthetics. This design celebrates their histories of social and community gatherings, notably powwows, rodeos, and dances, while honoring Lily’s memories of the “Hat and Boot Special.”
“This design roots us in reclaiming Western aesthetics that come from Indigenous tribes, materials, and cultures,” says Kinsale. “It starts conversations. The dress pictured is a real dress from Lily’s family that Lily wanted to honor. This design is personal and beautiful and references so many things at once. We like metaphors - we’re writers and artists after all.”
Each T-shirt or sweatshirt purchased from the HOSH x NDN Girls Book Club collaboration also includes a complimentary book from HOSH and NDN Girls Book Club. All books are sourced from Black Walnut Bookstore, an independent Indigenous bookseller.
